2010 PSC Club Events

In the past, PSC has largely limited its Chesapeake Bay activities to training sails and our two Raft Up on Memorial Day and Labor Day.  In fact, there’s something happening on the Chesapeake Bay nearly every weekend.  Recognizing that sailing is supposed to be, first and foremost fun, the PSC  Boat Owners have been looking at loosely organized events around the Bay.  These are not official PSC events but come as you are activities, open to members who own a boat, charter a boat, or simply want to drive over and meet us there.

  • May 29, 30, and 31—PSC Memorial Day Raft Up
  • June 26--Tilghman Island Seafood Festival.   Coordinator: Mike Steiner
  • July 2,3, & 4—Tony Skivo coordinating.
  • July 24th—The Beach Boys at the Inner Harbor.  Ken Skelps is working on.
  • July 31st--Chesapeake Folk Festival at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, St. Michaels.  Possible event
  • August 14-15th--Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend at Rock Hall. Possible event
  • September 4,5, and 6—PSC Labor Day Raft Up
  • September 11th--The Boating Party at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.  This is the CBMM’s fall gala fund raiser. Possible event
  • October 2-3rd--Fells Point Festival. Possible event
  • Dates and Destinations TBD--A fall week on the Chesapeake Bay?

PSC Raft-Ups

mdru 102sep06

What's A Raft Up? It's a big PSC sailing trip on the Chesapeake Bay scheduled during the three-day holiday weekends. We call these flotillas "raft-ups" because we tie the boats together, like a raft, when we anchor the first night in a cove. Often we are joined by PSC members who own their own boats, and our rafts build to more than a dozen boats! The second night we stay at a marina and enjoy dinner together in a local restaurant. The third day we set sail for our home ports.  Click here to see where we have rafted-up in the past.

Can Anyone Go? Yes! All you have to be is a PSC member or a guest of a member; NO SAILING EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! Raft-ups are great fun! They provide an opportunity to get to know fellow PSCers, crew on large sailing yachts, and explore the Bay with experienced PSC skippers.

How much does it cost?  See the PSC Rate Schedule for current raft up rates.  In addition to the raft up charge which pays for the charter cost of the boat, each crew shares the cost of common expenses for the weekend such as fuel, pump outs, and dock fees.

May I Use Frequent Volunteer Sea Mile Coupons? Yes! Members who have accrued Frequent Volunteer Sea Miles by volunteering for the PSC can use up to three FVSM coupons ($75) to offset their own payment.

Whom Should I Pay? Send your payment (checks made payable to "Pentagon Sailing Club") and your raft up sign up form to the Raft-up Coordinator. Check the page for the raft up you want for the sign up form and the mailing address.  Click here for the 2010 Memorial Day Raft-Up.

Do PSC Skippers on Raft-ups Get Discounts?  Yes!  Skippers of PSC owned, leased or chartered boats pay half (50% off) the applicable Crew Rate and may use their FVSM coupons as mentioned above.

Do Raft-Up Coordinators Get Discounts?  Yes!  The designated Raft-Up Coordinator pays half (50% off) the applicable Crew Rate PLUS he/she also earns five FVSM coupons for coordinating the Raft-up.  If the Raft-Up Coordinator is also assigned as the Skipper of a PSC owned, leased or chartered boat (already at 50% off), however, no further discount is applied; sorry.  FVSM credits toward payments are still applicable, though.

How About Boat Owners? PSC Members with their own boats are encouraged to join us at no charge beyond marina slip fees and restaurant bills. Notify the Raft-Up Coordinator early so that marina and restaurant reservations can be made. Provide your boat's name, LOA (incl. bow pulpits, swim platforms, etc), beam, draft, power requirements and cell phone number.

I'm a Skipper, how does the raft-up process work? Click here for all the details on how to enter and depart a raft!

Exploring the Chesapeake Bay

There are two major cruising guides that I use for the Chesapeake Bay.  Dozier’s Waterway Guide has good coverage of marinas and facilities.  In contrast, Chesapeake Bay Magazine’s cruising guide has better coverage of anchorages and gunkholes.
Chesapeake Bay Magazine calls itself the ultimate "where to go” and “what to do" guide for the Chesapeake Bay.   It includes articles on boating including destinations, personal experiences, and marina reviews. This is a link to their website containing all of their articles on bay destinations.  http://www.chesapeakeboating.net/ME2/Default.asp
This link will take you directly to Chesapeake Bay Magazine’s destinations:   http://www.chesapeakeboating.net/ME2/dirsect.asp?sid=B44B51DAD7A74CA2BD95C7C7660B49B6&nm=Destinations
