Basic Sailing Man Overboard (MOB) Quickstop Recovery Diagram

These notes are from PSC Senior Bay Instructor, Sheldon Turetsky, 8-28-02:

"Before I instruct on the Quick-Stop method itself, I always go through several verbal drills including making everyone individually recite the following generic "objectives" correctly:

1.  Get flotation to the MOB.
2.  Stop forward progress of the boat.
3.  Get alongside the victim.
4.  Attach the victim to the boat.
5.  Recover the MOB into the boat.

Once they are all clear on these, I proceed to cover the actual steps of the Quick-Stop method.  When the first volunteer starts, I offer to allow them to practice back-winding the jib, if necessary.  After anyone has difficulty in completing the recovery in under 2 minutes (usually because they miscalculated the last turn), I use that as a cue to bring up the issue about starting the engine (leave in neutral) if you have one [Bay auxiliary sailboats only, not river sailboats with an outboard motor].  Also, when there is no wind, we still practice several reps of the MOB drill... and that's when we get our best times (usually <50 seconds... [One member] did it in 33 seconds for an unofficial Club record)."

Notes:

The club standard is recovery in 2 minutes or less.

Club policy is to practice at least one crewed MOB quick stop recovery on the first day of all PSC Bay sails, weather and crew permitting.  One should avoid practicing in areas near Annapolis Harbor or Annapolis Bay area.
