|Keelboat Training Program
The Pentagon Sailing Club, based out of Capitol Cove Marina on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB), offers basic keelboat sailing courses on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. We conduct the training aboard our four 22 foot keelboat sailing sloops (Catalina CAPRIs). All have outboard motors, a full complement of sails, and sparse accommodations below deck. Successful completion of our Basic Sailing Course results in a Pentagon Sailing Club qualification that will allow you to sail the club keelboats on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. In addition it is possible to earn both the American Sailing Association (ASA) 101 and 103 certifications. These certifications are not automatic, but by studying the material and taking advantage of the training opportunities provided, these certifications can be earned. Please note that beginning in the 2018 Sailing Season you will need to finalize your ASA 103 certification with a Day Bay Sail.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will have the basic sailing skills necessary to safely skipper a small keelboat in designated, inshore waters, during moderate weather conditions. Upon the recommendation of a senior sailing instructor and taking the time to learn the club boat rental procedures, you will be qualified to check-out one of the PSC keelboats for personal use on the Potomac and Anacostia rivers.
The Basic Sailing Course is generally presented in two full weekends of on-the-water sessions (approximately 32 hours) and two weekday evening classes conducted between 7:00 & 9:00 PM before the weekend sessions. Successful completion of the course requires passing a written examination after the practical on-the-water evaluation. Each class has an average of 12 students with three students and one instructor per boat. The cost for these classes includes all instruction, the textbook, logbook, other course materials, and your first years dues to the American Sailing Association.
The Basic Sailing Courses are our most popular events and usually sell out for the season by early summer. For questions or more information please contact Jeanne Burns, River Training Coordinator.
