Basic Celestial Navigation.

This is basic level class open to all, but with a knowledge of dead reckoning navigation.

You will learn to apply basic celestial navigation theory and practice to determine latitude and longitude at sea using a sextant.

Course will include:

  • Introduction to the required tables in H229 and the Nautical Almanac.
  • Using the Sextant (bring your own if you have one)
  • Shooting the sun (we will use an artificial horizon weather permitting)
  • Using the nautical almanac and other resources, including Apps, calculate a line of position at different times and calculate or running fix.

*Required to have working knowledge of dead reckoning navigation, i.e., chart reading and plotting. Ideally you would have successfully completed  the PSC navigation class or have ASA 105.

The course is expected to last 6 hours. The class will start at 9:00am and continue to about 3:00pm. For those that want to practice they can stay after class ends.

Instructor: Dr. Philippe Duverger

Dr. Duverger is an instructor at PSC and an offshore skipper for the United States Naval Academy. We are very fortunate for him to agree to teach this class. Space is limited so don’t wait. This class will fill up quickly.

Location: American Legion Post 176, 6520 Amhurst Ave, Springfield, VA 22150 in the Upstairs Meeting Room

Members may use one (1) FVSM for this class. Please check the FVSM spreadsheet to make sure you have FVSM(s) available before choosing either of these pricing options.
