    January PSC Monthly Social

Speakers: Michael Wood and Jay McGinnis from the Valhalla Sailing Project!

Valhalla Sailing Project: Providing wounded, disabled, and transitioning veterans an opportunity to adopt a new family and lifestyle through the sport of sailing as a means to cope with PTSD and prevent veteran suicide.

Michael Wood and Jay McGinnis, both disabled combat veterans and competitive sailors, have experienced first-hand the benefits of competitive sailboat racing in their own transition to civilian life. The demand for team coordination, integrated communication and reliance on your teammate that is required in successful one-design racing directly mirrors those same aspects of the veteran’s service whether as part of a Marine Corps or Army infantry team, a Navy boat crew or an Air Force aircraft crew. It is precisely this camaraderie and sense of belonging that many veterans describe as the thing they struggle to find after transitioning to civilian life.

    WHAT WE'VE ACHIEVED

    • Over the last 4 years, 150 veterans have participated in our learn to sail clinics.

    • In 2018, we successfully competed in 3 distance races on the Chesapeake Bay with a 75% Veterans crew.

Location: Rhodeside Grill, 1836 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Virginia 22201

Time: 6 PM for appetizers/dinner/drinks; 7 PM for Presentation

Winter Training Series: Heavy Weather Sailing

Bad weather at sea can generate fear and uncertainty, sap morale and lead to poor decision making. But it doesn’t need to. This course will help to prepare you to have a well thought-out strategy to see the storm not as an ordeal demanding superhuman strength, skill and endurance, but just as a different type of weather.

    SAVE THE DATE!

Who: Boat Captain, Boat Teams, and YOU!

What: River Team's "Splashing" of the PSC River Boat Line: Aguila, Falcon, Gannett, and Peregrine

When: Saturday, 14 March 2020 (Rain Date: Saturday, 21 March)

    Time: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Location: Capital Cove Marina, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, DC

Why: To prepare for an exciting season of sailing on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers

Bottom line: Come join the fun and camaraderie as the PSC River Team "splashes" the boats in preparation of the 2020 sailing season on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.   The boat captains have spent cold (and sometimes warm) winter days constantly checking the boats and drafting their maintenance plans.  As we head into spring, the Boat Captains and their respective team members will conduct pre-season maintenance to ensure the boats will be safe and available for the PSC's busy training, social, and racing events.

So join us on Saturday, 14 March and help splash the boats.  It will be fun and enjoyable as the camaraderie among the River Team members is infectious. Another reason for coming out is to learn the intricacies and nuances of boat maintenance.  Of course, there will be plenty of sea stories shared as well.

By the way,  the River Team will provide donuts, bagels, and coffee/water for the morning crew plus pizza soda/pop/water/gatorade for the afternoon crew.

Contact me should you have any questions.

    Cheers,

    Darryl

The 27th annual Leukemia Cup will take place on Saturday, September 5th.  This charitable fundraiser supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and is the Potomac River's biggest annual regatta.  PSC will enter up to four boats in the competition.  Each boat will be skippered by an experience PSC raising skipper, but the crews are open to all PSC members.  We'll rally up at Capitol Cove Marina at 8:00 am.  The regatta is followed by an awards ceremony, silent auction, and BBQ cookout at the Washington Sailing Marina.

Since its inception, the Leukemia Cup has raised millions of dollars for lifesaving research and patient services, bringing help and hope to patients and their families.  If you'd like to sponsor a boat and/or donate to the fight against blood cancer, please visit PSC's fundraising site, which will be available by mid-August; your contributions are tax deductible.

This race is open to all PSC members.  If you're interested in participating, please contact the Racing Captain at racing@pentagonsailing.org for further details.  Current Racing Squadron members should sign up at Racing Sign-Up Sheet.
