Winter Training Series: Basic Celestial Navigation

You will learn to apply basic celestial navigation theory and practice to determine latitude and longitude at sea using a sextant.

Course will include:

  • Introduction to the required tables in H229 and the Nautical Almanac.
  • Using the Sextant (bring your own if you have one)
  • Shooting the sun (we will use an artificial horizon weather permitting)
  • Using the nautical almanac and other resources, including Apps, calculate a line of position at different times and calculate or running fix.

*Required to have working knowledge of dead reckoning navigation, i.e., chart reading and plotting.
