Aguila and Gannet Haul-Out

  • 21 Oct 2018
  • 9:00 AM
  • JBAB Capital Cove Marina

1. Purpose:  To coordinate the effort of moving FALCON, AGUILA and GANNET from their assigned slips to hard locations at Capital Cover Marina to close out the 2018 sailing season.

2. Concept:

The objectives of 21 October’s maintenance day is to remove, clean, winterize, and identify deficiencies on AGUILA and GANNET, clean the clubhouse, and clean PFDs.  There will be three work locations on 21 October for PSC’s maintenance day:  Boats at their slips, cleaning station, and clubhouse that will begin work at 9AM.  The cleaning station will be next to the white maintenance tent and will have a power washer and cleaning materials.  Activities at the clubhouse will be set up a refreshment station, clean PFDs, and general cleaning of the clubhouse. PEREGRINE has already been cleaned, winterized, and moved to its position on the hard. FALCON will be moved from the water, cleaned, winterized and moved to its position on the hard after its last race on 3 November.

Boat captains will oversee movement of their respective boats from assigned slips to the hard, and prepare boats for the off-season.  Boat captains will be supported by their boat teams and by other PSC members during PSC’s All Hands Maintenance Day.

Boat Captains and their teams will be at their boats by 0900 to prepare and move their boats.  AGUILA will be moved first, then GANNET. Refreshments--coffee and doughnuts--will be available from 0900; lunch from 1200 --sandwiches, chips and soft drinks (Abi Dorhosti and Leslie Buettner).  The cleaning station will be established by 0930 with power washer and cleaning equipment (Sak and Paul Giarra)

3.  Weather Forecast:

NOAA forecast as of 20 Oct for Sunday at JBAB is high of 52-degrees, sunny, with NE winds at 18 knots, gusts to 35 knots.  No precipitation is forecasted, but it will be chilly and lusty.

5.  Coordinating Instructions for Boat Winterization

Prior to removing boats from the water at the ramp, disconnect fuel line from the engine and run engine to expend any fuel in the engine while engine is in the water.  Masts—with the exception of PEREGRINE—will not be lowered, however, Boat Captains may request lowering the mast of their boat for a maintenance requirement.

Boat Captains will direct their teams and JBAB’s Capital Cove Marina personnel (Mert) to move boats out of the water, to the cleaning station, and to positions on the hard.  River Commodore will have a truck with hitch as backup.  Use the same number trailer that corresponds with boat numbers.

Man aloft will not be done under any circumstance.

See para 7 for procedures to haul and winterize boats.

0900

-Prepare AGUILA and GANNET at slip (move dock lines to starboard, GANNET remove sails at slip while AGUILA moves to cleaning station).

-Move AGUILA from her slip and move out of the water (Lead:  Duncan Barks);

7.  Procedures to haul and winterize boats:

Haul out:

-While at slip, move dock lines and fenders to starboard (bow, stern and springs)

-Ensure someone is on the boat at all times when underway from slip to ramp;

-Use dock lines to control boat at ramp;
-Enroute or at ramp, disconnect engine fuel line from the engine, while engine is running to ensure that remaining fuel in engine is exhausted;

-Use ground guides to back vehicle down ramp and connect tether to boat.

Movement to cleaning area:

-Ensure mast clears any obstacles

-Move to designated cleaning area - environmental tarp will not be necessary for this cleaning.

-Power wash hull and deck ensuring that spray is no greater than 45-degrees from surface of hull/deck and proper nozzle is used (it’ll peel off gelcoat and paint otherwise)

At cleaning area or in the slip on the hard:

-Place chocks on wheels and aft end of trailer; at hard slip do same plus dunnage under wheel at bow;

-Remove engine, place on engine stand, and label with boat name—and any discrepancies;

-Remove fuel tanks and place in fuel locker (use for power washer if necessary);

-Keep PFD and Type IV in cabin;

-Inventory and secure items on boat for accountability and to identify shortfalls;

-Unless there is a reason to drop the mast (as with PEREGRINE now) DO NOT lower the mast;

-Remove lifelines, boom, sails, running rigging, tiller and rudder and secure in cabin, less sails;

-Label and secure sails in sail bags in clubhouse backroom loft;

-Remove, label (date, charge, boat) and place batteries on dunnage in clubhouse backroom.

Placement of boats on hard slips:

-Place trailer in order of boats as in water slips;

-Take a photo of the boat inventory and punch list (and send it to me) and place the hard copies in maintenance book (larger spiral notebook on desk next to Captains’ Locker).

Spread out environmental tarp to dry.  Once dried, fold and return to club house below the table (left as entering the house).
